The fashion industry may, at a glance, appear all glamorous and glitzy. But in reality, it consists of several types of jobs. It's not enough to receive a degree from a reputable fashion or design school. You should take time to find out where your interests and skills lie. Here are a few ways to help you determine a career in fashion.

Designer

Assess your skills in drawing and cutting patterns to prepare garments. If you're interested and particularly skilled in drawing or sketching and working with fabrics, you may want to consider a career as a designer. But bear in mind, designers have a certain level of taste and an eye for trends in clothing.

Fashion Illustrator

Determine if you want to just draw designs and not work with fabrics, or if you want be more involved in the creation of garments. If your talents and interests are in designing, a career as a fashion illustrator may be suitable for you.

Fashion buyer

If you have the talent for knowing what the future trends in fashion will be, and have a savvy business and bargaining sense, you can choose a career as a fashion buyer. Fashion buyers have that ability to predict trends and make a successful business out of it.

Pattern maker

Appraise your penchant for following garment patterns. A pattern maker's job is to convert the designer's plans into working patterns for duplication. Pattern making has a lot to do with understanding fabrics - their makeup, texture, etc. It also takes sharp visualization skills to become a good pattern maker. It's a pattern maker's job to know which fabrics can support design concepts.
