How to Have a Career in High School Sports

Posted in Career Building

Athletes start dreaming big early. They dream of being paid to play their favorite sport and become stars. The problem is, its odds on that majority of these aspiring athletes won't be the next sports star. Only the most talented players will go far, and only the truly exceptional ones will become stars.

Most professional coaches are former players, as well as majority of college coaches. For sports enthusiasts who prefer to pursue a career in sports instead of staying in the sidelines, a career in high school sports is a viable option.

Here's how you can pursue a career in high school sports

Get a well-rounded college education

Pursue a well-rounded college curriculum, preferably with a major in education. Most high schools require coaches to teach other subjects.

Become adept in different sports

High schools usually cut costs for sports trainers and coaches, thus they will go for coaches who can teach multiple disciplines to fill positions.

Do some research

Visit websites that have listings of high school sports jobs. Check out tazsport.com.

Apply to better private schools

Send out applications to better private schools that have full-time openings for coaches. There are also a number of part-time work available for sports officials including referees, umpires, etc.

Work your way up

You may want to start working at a junior high school or elementary level physical education instructor, then eventually apply for better jobs. Coaching jobs sometimes require you to move where he/she will be working, so be prepared to relocate.

Use your experience

Coaches and physical education teachers can double up their credentials to the school's sports teams.
