Non Traditional Jobs for Women

The U.S. Department of Labor defines Non-Traditional Jobs for woman as one where in less than 25% of those employed in the field are women. Four almost five decades, the percentage of women in the work force steadily grew. But despite of that, there are still occupations in the work force where women aren't expected to get.

Even though we are already in the 21st century, there has been a number of firsts for women in the labor force just within the last decade. For instance, Margaret Albright was the first woman to become secretary of state. The Plaza Hotel in New York just hired its first doorman in 1997. And only now. 11 years later, did we see a a woman (Sen. Hilary Clinton) win a Democratic presidential primary.

These are not the only jobs where women are scarce. The US Department of Labor reports that the following are considered non-traditional occupations for women:

  • Air Traffic Controllers
  • Architects
  • Auto Mechanics
  • Butchers
  • Carpenters
  • Chefs
  • Electricians
  • Machinists
  • Mail carriers
  • Plumbers
  • Police Officers
  • Repairpersons
  • Roofers
  • Sheet Metal Workers
  • Tool and Die Makers
  • Truck Drivers

It's surprising, to know that at this point in time, after decades of struggle to have equal rights are still talking about women's breakthroughs in the work field, but it is always good to know that women haven't stopped making progress.
