Why It Great to Work in IT
Posted in Career Fields
IT is not the 'realm of nerds' that you might think it is. And neither does an IT job require people to hole up in a room with nothing but computers and conjure up complicated programs. IT jobs actually have plenty of 'cool' aspects to it.
IT's is not boring
Being in charge of an entire companies super high-tech tools is enough to keep anyone occupied. True, some IT posts can be monotonous such as fixing bugs and running backups. But these posts are a minority.
Consider how fast technology evolves. IT pros need to constantly re-educate - usually on their own time - themselves just to keep up with the changes. But that's exactly why it's exciting to be in the IT field - there's always something new to learn. And the fact that you're way ahead of everyone else doesn't hurt either.
You get to play with cool new stuff
Though most IT guys spend a considerable amount of their time extending the life of old technologies, they also get to test-drive plenty of cool new gizmos. Think of it this way, IT pros get to play with the latest laptops and smartphones before big bosses get to lay their hands on them. Same is true with enforcing new servers, networking gear, etc.
You make people's lives easier
In essence, it's the IT people's job to maintain existing technologies that allow workers to do their jobs, and implement new ones to increase work efficiency and productivity. This is what is called process streamlining.
Tech catalysts
As technology continues to advance, it will continue to shape businesses and people's lives. IT professionals are in a unique position in that they link technological advances and organizations; are catalysts in the shaping of businesses and corporations - if they concentrate their efforts on using technology to improve the organization and lives of its workers.
Heroes
Lastly, IT pros get to play hero every so often. How many accidentally deleted files have they recovered? How many crashed PCs have they brought back to life? Grateful employees are more than happy to give 'thank you' tokens, or offer invites to dinners - where they sing your praises to fellow employees. All in a day's work for these IT pros.
