Career Change Mistakes to Avoid
Posted in Changing Career
There are times when you will feel that your career is going nowhere. That you might be bored, lost or just plain unhappy with what you're doing right now. Those are the times that you face a crossroad. It goes back to the question "Should I stay or should I go?" There are a lot of people who have decided in their hearts that they will "go" however, the only thing that is stopping them is they don't know where to go.
People might have different skills that they might not be using in their current careers or they might have been duly promoted to the point that they do not already love what they are doing. That is the time that people change careers. That is the time that they say to themselves that they need to change careers.
Changing careers is quite frankly, one of the biggest decisions that job-seekers face. There are a lot of possible outcomes that you might not have thought through and there are a lot of consequences that you will have to face when you do finally push through with such a big shift in your working life.
So, before you shift gears and jump to a new career field, do consider some of the career change mistakes that most people encounter so that you will be able to avoid them as well as the frustration that they bring.
Not having a plan
One of the biggest mistakes that you will do when you're changing careers is not having a long-term plan to go with it. A successful career change will only happen if you invest in months and months to plan and strategize your take on things. If you don't have a good strategy or plan, you could very well end up drifting over a longer period of time.
In order to have a detailed plan, you should know what it is you want to do. Your action plan should include strategies for your finances and your education or training for the skills that you need to develop for your new career. If you do not have a plan, you might tend to simply just accept whatever job offer it is that comes your way regardless of whether it is a good fit for you and your skills or not.
You hate your current job
One of the mistakes that people make is that they shift careers only because they are disgruntled with their current job. This requires more thinking because it might just be the company you are currently in or maybe even your boss.
Whatever it is, you should not make these outside factors to dictate what you will be doing for the rest of your life. It will only be a tragedy if you shift your careers and then suddenly miss the things that you used to do before.
If you have what it takes and you have the different skills that you need to do what you love, then by all means continue with what you're doing. Maybe you are just an unfortunate person who works for a company that underpays you and has assigned you a cranky boss for the rest of your stay. Dig deeper and make the right choice.
