Goal Setting Tips
Posted in Essential Info
True, setting goals is the easietst part when your want to accomplish somethings. All the hardwork comes after you set your goal. But did you know that how you set your goal help determine whether you'll succeed or fail?
Below are a few goal-setting tips that can make it easier for you to reach your goals:
Set specific and realistic goals
When trying to make a change, people who know specifically what they want to achieve and who are aware that their goals are realistic, are the ones who succeed. Instead of saying "I will help conserve energy." Why not say "I will turn-off and unplug appliances and/or light/s that are not in use." Goals seem much more doable when they are specified.
Give it time
It is not easy to change an established routine. When you decide to change something in your routine, do not expect to be able to do it smoothly. Allow for a month or two 'transition period'. Your brain needs time to adjust - to accept that this new thing is going to be part of your regular routine.
Make it stick
Constant reminders trains your brain to make it possible. Saying your goals out loud everyday, or writing them down are good ways of reminding yourself of what you want to achieve.
Do not please other people
The desire to make a change has to come from you - not other people. Otherwise, it will feel like an obligation. It's more difficult to commit to a goal if you're doing it for other people, and not for yourself.
It's normal to slip-up
Again, because you are so used to following an established pattern, trying a different course will take some getting to used to. And while you're at this 'getting used to' phase, sometimes you might find yourself reverting to your old routine. Slipping up is normal. Your brain is still adjusting to this new idea. Give it time to 'reset'. Eventually, it will run your new program without a hitch. So the next time you slip up, cut yourself some slack. Just re-focus, and get right back on track.
