Getting an Internship in the Music Industry

There's more to the music industry that just making beautiful music. Aside from creating and writing music and lyrics there's also the technical aspect of recording and producing.

Once the songs are recorded, there's the issue of marketing and production, which of course includes touring and setting up concerts. This, in turn involves coordinating schedules, accommodations, etc.

An internship in the music industry is a good training ground for a number of careers. Apart from this, interning in the music industry provides a number of useful contacts and character references that can help you in your job search come graduation.

Here's how you can become a music industry intern:

Do your research

Go to the websites of the largest music industry labels. Check out Sony, Universal, EMI, Columbia. Etc.

Click careers link

In every website, including record label websites, there are is a careers link where you can see important things such as job openings, how to apply, where to send your CV, etc. Find the link that says 'internship applications." In many music industry company sites, the application forms can be downloaded directly.

Princeton Review

You may also want to check out the Princeton Review website at www.princetonreview.com to find more music industry internship opportunities. They list many companies that offer great opportunities with less competition.

Consult with your advisor

Confer with your academic advisor to arrange for academic credit for your chosen internship opportunity. Your academic advisor may also give you more information about the companies you are considering.

Some companies recruit directly through university career placement offices, so your academic advisor can also provide you with information on that. Plus, your advisor can also give you advice on choosing the internship that best suits you.

Competition

Competition is to be expected. But if you want to be accepted in one of the top music industry labels, expect the competition to be extremely tough.

Make sure your application materials stand out. Review them carefully and submit them on time. You don't want to be taken out of the running for being late and careless.

Internship stipend

There are a lot of companies that pay a stipend to their interns. Find beforehand if your options do. This is particularly helpful if your internship takes place during the academic year and other work-study opportunities can't be had.
