Ethics are important because it spells the difference between what is right and what is wrong. Following ethical norms is a consensus among people who do not want to show disrespect and disregard for the basic rights and welfare of other people.

Therefore, a breach in ethics is a sign of disrespect.

Ethics are generally followed in every facet of our lives. This goes for the workplace, too. At work, there is what we call professional standards of behavior, otherwise referred to as professional ethics. At the top of the list of professional ethics is honesty.

Why dishonesty?

Common sense tells us that telling the truth is the rule of thumb, especially in dealing with jobs and employment. However, this is not always being followed. In fact, surveys reveal that a lot of people lie when they are out looking for a job. More often than not, they lie in their resumes and during job interviews.

The top seven things that people lie about when they are job hunting are as follows:

  • skills
  • previous job experiences
  • job expectations
  • previous salaries
  • reasons why they left their previous jobs
  • dates of employment
  • periods of employment

Putting our foot forward when we really want a job in inevitable. Actually, that is expected behavior already. But going overboard is not such a good idea, especially if you will resort to lies just to snag the position you've always wanted.

We all have dreams and aspirations, especially with regards to advancing our careers. But if it's at the expense of resorting to cunning ways, then it's not worth it.
