Coping with Job Loss

Posted in Job Loss & Resignation

Whether it is because of downsizing, contract termination, punishment for misconduct, or forced retirement, losing a job can hurt you deeply and stressfully.  Job loss can have an effect in your emotional health, such as going through cycles of denial, anger, frustration, and adaptation.

Many of us identify ourselves by what we do for a living.  Once our job is taken away, it is as if a part of our identity is taken away.  There are several issues that need to be addressed in coping with job loss, and we need to start somewhere.

Apply for unemployment compensation if qualified

Contact your State Unemployment Insurance Office and find out if the qualifications fit you.  If you are qualified for unemployment compensation, gather the documents you need for application, including your Social Security Number, as well as a list of your former employers and their addresses.

You can receive your claims weekly or bi-weekly, either online, by phone or in person depending on the state.

Seek career help from your state

Every state has its local Employment Service Office, which provides free services including helping you with your resume, job interviews, career counseling, access to job listings, and job training.

Deal with your health insurance

Despite your job loss, you can still be covered ever if you are no longer part of the organization.  This is through the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act (COBRA), which allows those separated from their jobs to purchase health insurance at a group rate for a limited time.

Consider a career change

With the loss of your job, maybe this is a high time for you to pursue your dream job, or perhaps a profession that you think would become profitable in the years to come.  Even if you lack the experience, you can utilize the skills and achievements in your former job and apply them in the work that you pursue.  You may also consider relocating.
