There are many reasons why this is being done.
First of all, a performance review is a part of an employee's career development. Through a performance review, employees may be given some feedback as to their actual performance on a given period of time. It can also help identify areas where an employee might require some further training.
It can also be a means for employers to identify areas where the employee has excelled and may allocate corresponding rewards for a job well done. A performance review can also be a basis on which employers can determine if an employee is due for a raise or promotion and other similar personnel actions.

Document your accomplishments and experiences
Try to list down what you have been able to do in terms of accomplishments during the work period covered by the performance review. You can list down all the goals that you have met and the things that you have done worth mentioning during the appraisal.
You can also list down other things or concerns that you think is worth discussing with your employer that may further help you and other employees improve job performance. A performance review is also one way of fostering better communication between employer and the employee.
Learn from the results
Of course, not all performance reviews always come out positive. There may be some things that employers may see that an employer can improve on and do better. Performance reviews should be taken as a learning experience and negative comments taken as a means to improve on.
It may be something that you may have overlooked and do not consider as important before. But through a performance review, you may be able to improve your mindset and in so doing, be able to provide a better performance that your employer is expecting.
