Overcoming Undermanagement

Posted in Management & Leadership

It may be something that most employees never seem to notice at their workplace, but undermanagement can be a pervasive problem, especially if your company continues to grow big. There are many instances where managers may not be able to effectively look over the workforce in a level that would provide employees with equal attention. This is basically what undermanagement is all about.

The problem with being undermanaged is that employees may end up quite disadvantaged in many aspects. Lack of management attention can result in some employees feeling a bit left out. It can also rob them of certain opportunities and resources that would enable them to realize company as well as personal goals. Undermanagement can also lead to diminished performance and achievement since the lack of ample supervision and management can cause some areas of the organization to suffer due to lack of leadership as well as provide clear expectations and guidelines of what needs to be achieved.

Is undermanagement solely the fault of managers and bosses? In a way, it is. But this does not necessarily mean that you, as an employee, can't do anything about it. Here are some tips that might help you out:

  1. Learn to manage yourself first.

  2. Try to take advantage of whatever time you have meeting with your boss.

  3. If you have multiple bosses, try meeting with them one at a time.

  4. Get to know what your boss expects from you as much as possible.

  5. Learn to track your performance.

  6. Make extra effort to earn credits or rewards at the office.

Undermanagement may not be a problem if you know how to make do with what is made available for you. Even as an employee, you can take the initiative to make sure that you do not suffer from the effects of undermanagement, especially if you see it happening in your own workplace.
