Building a business network would take more than just establishing as many contacts as possible. There are many different ways to do that and the easy way would be getting as many business cards as possible. What you would be building is a contact list, it won't work as a business network where building relationships is necessary.
When building a business network, it is important to have a certain goal. You have to know the type of people that you wish to have on your own network. You also should know where you may be able to approach them. A good venue for initially building your business networks is by attending certain business networking events. These are organized events where people usually get together to meet up with other people that belong to the same industry or business.
There are many business networking events always organized that become a very good opportunity for you to meet up with like minded people and possibly build contacts that would eventually end up on your business network. These events can be seminars, conferences as well as trade shows where one may be able to meet up with a lot of possible contacts. But you should make sure that you attend the right networking event. Choose the one that can be associated with your type of business. Try also to attend gatherings where potential clients get together as well.
As you build up your business network, it is also important that you should strive for quality instead of quantity. It would be fairly easy to build a huge business network composed of merely contacts. It is harder to build meaningful contacts. In terms of getting the more benefit, it is usually a business network built on quality relationships that wins out. Quality business relationships are borne out of establishing trust, and that usually would be more important than just having a list of business names and numbers.
In building business networks, it is also important that you clearly state what you do or how your business deals with. It is important that you should be able to introduce yourself as well as your business in a way that other people will get the first time. It can be a rehearsed or a prepared introduction, but make sure that you make it short and informative enough. Formulate it also in such a way as to keep possible business contacts interested in what you do. Remember, you are building relationships. Keeping people interested in what you do will make your work easier and business network may be built with lesser effort this way.
