How to Get Your Dream Job

Posted in Networking Tips

You are passionate about a certain industry but lack the skills commonly associated with its most visible leaders. For instance, you do not have a shred of artistic talent, but you dream of becoming a comic-book illustrator.

It is possible that you would still get the job that you want despite the lack of skills by chekcing out these following tips.

Try working at the sidelines - You can try having your dream career through the "behind-the-scenes" approach. For instance, you dream of becoming a professional bike rider but realized you are no Lance Armstrong, but you may try working as a public relations officer in a bike company or as a cycling coach.

Being behind the scenes may offer more than just the opportunity to score freebies and gain exposure to your dream industry's leaders, as it may also help you enjoy what you do for a living as well as an added income.

Look beyond - Think broadly in terms of types of employers within your dream industry. For example, working in high fashion is not just about the designers but also about model representation, lifestyle writing, clothing warehouses, licensing agencies, consulting firms among others.

Be professional - It is important that you demonstrate your passion for your dream industry in a professional manner and not as a drooling fanatic. No employer wants to hire a "groupie" or "fans".

Join trade events - Your dream industry may have some industry-related events where you can attend such as conferences, seminars, exhibits, and conventions. Look for groups that you can join, which you can cite in your resume.

Go networking - In any department you are in, it is especially critical to create a network of acquaintances and colleagues if you are pursuing a job at a high-profile company.

These employers do not need to go far to look for employees and would rather hire people that they know or have come through their recognized recommendations. Developing a solid network may take several months, so it is best to maintain your current job while doing so.

Volunteer - If you find an opportunity to volunteer in your dream industry, go for it. It is a great way to make connections and learn the basics of your dream job. It also shows that you are willing to give extra time for yourself for the industry.

Express enthusiasm without going overboard - Once you land on that interview, don't be too excited about it. Remember to maintain your level of professionalism and avoid acting like a fanatic, even after landing that job.
