Networking Strategies For Job Seekers

Posted in Networking Tips

So you already know what you want in a career and you want to finally be in the job loop? Then hear this: you have to learn how to network. Networking is essentially marketing yourself to as many people as you can find. If there are professionals out there, then by all means, they are your target audience.

If you are looking for a position in an ad agency or maybe you feel like you can take on a sales job, then all that stands in the way of you getting your new job is actually yourself. You need to get up, talk to people and let them know that you have what it takes.

The way to go about it is not really the type that you would characterize as a cold call wherein you simply call up an agency and present yourself to them as a competent professional in need of work. Far from it.

When you are networking, you go around and actually play a game where discretion and aggressiveness should be in perfect harmony. A balance between the two should always be maintained and here are a few things to consider when you decide that your hat is finally in.

Don't be afraid to talk

As a "networker" of sorts, you need to get your name out there. If you know a "friend who knows a friend" then by all means try to get your name to that particular contact person. You'll never know what you will be able to achieve by simply expressing your intention of wanting to apply.

People will distinctly remember when a friend of theirs is looking for a job. Some would even go out of their way to email and call up other people they might know just to be able to schedule you for an interview. So don't pass up the opportunity and open your mouth.

Start listening

When you finally have a golden opportunity to tell a person how much your suited for the job, you might want to step on the brakes for a little bit. Job-hunting can be quite stressful and it's important that you don't come off as someone who is pushy and overly aggressive.

Most people would like to give you advice if they really don't know anybody who is looking for a person of your abilities. Try to listen to these people. You might pick up a few pointers that might eventually land you a job in the future. The important thing is to ask around and don't be pushy.

Update, update, update!

Of course, if you are marketing yourself, then you should remember to always find time to keep your resume up-to-date. It's very important that you always try to have a copy of it whenever you know you're going to a place where you know you're going to meet people.

Keep a copy of you in the car or maybe have one burned onto a cd with some of your works as attachments. When you finally do find someone who can help you, you'll be glad that you made like a boy scout and prepared in advance.
