How to Practice Proper Office Etiquette
Posted in Office Etiquette
Do you always participate in gossip sessions in your office? Do you use perfume and cologne excessively to the point of damaging your coworkers' nostrils and making their eyes water? Do you often snoop around reading memos on other people's desks? Do you pluck eyebrow and cut nails in full sight of your coworkers? If you do, then you are not behaving properly in the office. Here are some ways to practice proper office etiquette.
Report to work on time
There is nothing sweeter than cuddling with your partner in bed early in the morning. But you have to remember that you have lots of work to do in the office. People in the office will notice if you arrive late. If you have difficulty leaving your house on time, or seem to be stuck in traffic jam all the time, perhaps you should try sleeping earlier and waking up earlier.
Appear well-groomed
Everyone (the elevator operator, the janitor, your coworkers, and your boss) will notice if you go to work every single day with a wrinkled pants, dirty fingernails, or messy hair. Who do you think your boss will choose to represent you company in a business meeting or on a trip - the person wearing plain white T-shirt, tattered jeans, and sneakers, or the person wearing freshly ironed clothes with a well-groomed feature?
Organize your desk
Consider your desk as an extension of yourself. An uncluttered and clean workspace shows that you are an organized person. However, your coworkers will regard you in a less favorable light if you have an untidy desk or cubicle. It is a pain for your associate to unearth missing items from under a mountain of papers.
Be attentive
You have to pay attention whether you are on the phone, in a meeting, or sitting in your coworker's office. People will put you in a bad light if they catch you with your mind floating or if you have no idea as to what really happened. Listen to what other people say and take notes. Do not interrupt when a coworker is talking, unless you really have to.
Telephone etiquette
Your coworkers will have issues with you if you spend most of your time making personal phone calls. Not only are personal calls disruptive, it is also very unfair to have enjoyable chats while your coworkers are killing themselves just to finish their tasks. You must minimize your personal phone calls and turn off your cell phone during business hours.
