Office Cubicle Etiquette
Posted in Office Etiquette
Office cubicles have become quite a common sight in most offices today. For most employees, it has become a place of refuge aside from being just a work area. And with most office cubicles usually usually placed beside one another, there is a set of rules that should govern its use. Office cubicle etiquette is there to ensure that a little privacy and respect towards other co-workers is properly maintained. Here are some of the most common office cubicle etiquette that employees should observe.
Maintain The Silence
Office cubicles may allow you a little bit privacy while you work. But bear in mind that such privacy extends just a extends a wall away from the other cubicle. Unwanted noises can easily distract your co-worker on the other side of the cubicle. Trying to maintain some level of silence can help ensure that everybody works more efficiently with less distractions.
In an office cubicle, try to avoid making noises especially those that are coming from the usual office equipment such as the PC. Avoid turning the volume up when you are using the PC speakers. Try to keep the sound at manageable and less distracting levels. Try also to avoid tapping noisily as you type on your keyboard. Avoid using audible alerts or at least try to keep the volume down. When talking with someone online or on the phone, try to use the headset or the handset.
Avoid Overdecorating
Many employees love to decorate their own personal working space at the office. A lot also tend to overdo it. What you might use to decorate your own office cubicle can also be a source of distraction for those people near you. Try to put your decorating ideas to a minimum in your office cubicle. Avoid putting up offensive or degrading materials as part of your cubicle decor. And most of all, try not to make your cubicle as a virtual storage room for all of your personal items. Always try to keep it clean.
Shun Strong Odors
A lot of employee complaints at work include dealing with odor related issues at the workplace. There may be some employees who might not be aware that strong perfumes and other similar smells can also be a distraction. One of the reasons for this is that a familiar smell such as a strong perfume can make one immune to its odor, much to the annoyance of co-workers who get distracted by its strong smell.
Whether pleasant or not, try to avoid becoming a source of strong odors in the workplace. Avoid eating strong smelling foods at the office cubicle. Avoid using odor spreading substances such as nail polish or perfume while at your office cubicle. In the same way, try not to make yourself a source of body odor distraction at the office by practicing good physical hygiene.
