Online Job Scam Awareness

Posted in Online Job Search

With the job market experiencing a recent increase of job applicants competing for available jobs, the opportunity for job scams may also be increasing. With more and more people becoming desperate in finding a new job in the face of prolonged unemployment brought about by a bleak job market, many of them are easily lured into certain job openings that eventually turn out to be just scams. A lot of people can be easily victimized by such job scams found online.

Payment Forwarding or Transfer Jobs

This type of job scams have recently become popular online. Although they offer a somewhat legitimate job especially for online job searchers, the type of job involved is considered as an illegal activity. This job involves an employer searching for people willing to forward and transfer money from one bank account to another. In typical fashion, the scammer requires the applicant's resume and let him or her go through an interview.

Upon hiring, the so-called employer will ask for the new employee's personal bank account where money would be deposited. The new "employee" would then be taking the deposited amount and then deposit it into another bank account provided by the employer. Although this might look legitimate, the job usually involves stolen money that is being laundered to make it "clean". This is illegal and can get the new employee into trouble with the authorities.

Reshipping Job Scam

Another similar job scam online involves a vacancy for jobs reshipping items. Once hired, employees are asked to forward packages sent to them to another address, usually requiring to have them repackaged. These packages usually contain stolen goods that are shipped to locations in order to prevent them from being tracked. Those found doing so can be charged as an accessory in transporting stolen goods.

Work from Home Job Scams

A very popular online job scam that has been going on for years takes the work-from-home job angle. In this type of job scam, work-from-home job opportunities are offered to people looking for work online. Such offers usually are about giving interested individuals access to the various work-at-home job opportunities to earn quick cash. But access to such job opportunities also requires interested parties to pay for a registration fee or purchase some required training materials.

Although not all work-at-home job opportunities found online are not necessarily scams, those that require certain fees to be paid by interested parties usually are. People should try to be aware of such scams especially during these times when more and more people are desperate to find a means of livelihood amid a bleak job market. Although the job opportunities may seem quite attractive, undue care should be taken in order to avoid becoming victims of such job scams.
