One of the main problems among job seekers nowadays is extreme lax communication. With today's technology, job hunting has become casual as it is gradually becoming unprofessional in a sense.

Imagine a resume with a smiley or whatever emoticon on it. How will a prospective employer take the job seeker seriously? Though many job seekers fall into this category, it is the younger ones who are more accustomed in this kind of behavior.

All these are a product of informal communication. It is the same thing for being relaxed with their own nonverbal communications when it comes to interviews. Though confidence and being relaxed seems nice to see, it is even more impressive to have a professional and prepared candidate before hiring managers.

What does not help you in being the perfect candidate?

Whatever your age may be, experts say that you have to avoid using emoticons, text message lingo. Even thank-you notes may take away your chance of getting that most coveted job. Examples are the smileys or the acronyms, as well as the abbreviated types typical in text message lingos.

Whether you have an outstanding application or otherwise, this can blow things up for you. So as much as possible, avoid giving off the wrong impression because of using inappropriate messages on your resumes, cover letters or thank-you notes.

What if you are obsessed with text message lingo?

As much as possible, avoid doing obsessing with text message lingos, emoticons, and the likes. Recruiters are not your friends. They are, well, recruiters. So avoid being too laid-back in front of them. No one knows what's cool and what's not for a hiring manager. So be professional and play it safe. If you asked yourself if you should put a smiley, then that is the time for you not to do it. Your actions speak the loudest and even more professionally. Not the emoticons and the likes.

With all these, the only reason for you to be seen as professional is to execute the right actions at the right time. Text messages as well as emoticons only generate the idea that you are not taking things seriously. And to be taken seriously means to take things professionally.
