What's In the Dress Code

Posted in Policies & Procedures

We have different motivations when it comes to our careers. Some people put high regards to financial aspects, while others believe that the fulfillment in doing something you really want to do is what drives them. Both of these are heavy and valid issues, but on a more trivial point of view, dress code is also a thing to be considered.

There are employees who are concerned about the office attire they are obliged to wear for work. Others perceive their personal comfort in wearing clothes for work as a big issue, and so they decide not to apply for jobs that require sets of clothing that they are not comfortable with.

Tips for employers

Generally, employers have a right to decide on what employees should wear, be it a uniform, casual office attire, or formal business attire. Here are the general tips for employers who want to carry out a dress code for their employees:

  • Opt for your employees' comfort.
  • Do not devise a dress code that discriminates based on gender.
  • Clarify the definition of the dress code you have set.
  • Inform your prospective employees about the dress code prior to the signing of job contract.
  • Set rules on the violation of the dress code so that you can properly reprimand employees who do not follow the rules.

Know your rights and responsibilities as an employer, but do not go overboard. When your employees do not understand the rationale behind the dress code you have devised, and if indeed there is no justification on your part, your workforce might decline and your business will suffer.
