Dealing With Pay Cuts
Posted in Salaries & Benefits
Employees need to deal with a lot of things in the workplace. How they manage to handle these things positively may help them get more satisfaction out of their own careers. One of the most difficult for most would probably be the issue of getting a pay cut.
Dealing with a pay cut can be a lot of things to a lot of people. Some may consider it as a possible loss of confidence in an employee's performance. This will lead most people to resign rather than accept such pay cuts. But sometimes there can be valid reasons why some employers may offer pay cuts to their workers.
The recent economic recession may be just one of them. Instead of reacting negatively to pay cut issues, employees can also react positively to it. Acceptance may be the only resort but employees can also take a proactive stance in order to fairly understand where they stand.
Clarify Matters
One of the ways for employees to take pay cuts with a grain of salt is to try and clarify certain matters. Employees affected should try to know the reason behind the pay cut as well as how long this will possible take effect. Employees should also clarify if the pay cuts would also include or affect some of their other benefits such as medical and health insurance coverages. Another important question to ask the manager on pay cuts is the actual time on when it will take effect.
Pay Cuts Should Cover Across The Board
If a company is undergoing difficulties during economic hard times, then getting pay cuts would be understandable. But in this case, the pay cuts should cover generally every employee on certain levels and should not only affect a certain department or two. Pay cuts limited on certain departments only would show a tinge of partiality and would be unfair for those people affected. This might be a sign for an employee to move on to look for better places of employment.
Consider The Possible Tradeoffs
If employees are given the option to negotiate their salary cuts, then they should try to consider other possible options. If the company is trying to save on possible expenses to keep the business afloat, then one of the possible ways may be a reduction of working time. Employees can try to renegotiate for a reduction of working time in addition to the pay cut. Not only might it feasibly help save on expenses but may also give employees time that they can devote to other things.
