Creative or outside the box thinking is only possible if one is open to new ways of seeing the world and has the willingness to explore. It is something that most people today seem to be lacking.

Most people would rather follow conventional or inside the box thinking because it might be more acceptable in society. Conventional thinking is usually governed by rules. Just as one might find being inside a box, ideas and thoughts have set limits and are contained and constrained by barriers.

For conventional thinkers, there is only one correct way of doing things. Following the rules will determine if one way is acceptable and deemed as the right and only way. Thinking inside the box means following what is the accepted norm. Thinking inside the box means that conventional wisdom is the only acceptable way of doing things and nothing else.

Thinking outside the box on the other hand is more open. Out of the box thinkers have the freedom to break free from convention if they want to. They may even try to take all the accepted ideas and thought from inside the box and make out a totally new idea or a new way of doing things. Thinking outside the box is trying to find other ways of doing a certain process. Out of the box thinking doesn't constrain itself to accepted rules. Instead such thinking tries to explore what possibilities are available from beyond the accepted rules.
