How to Be Assertive
Posted in Work Life & Balance
Stand Tall
One way to show your assertiveness is by trying to stand straight and tall. Avoid standing in a slouched posture. This can give you a look suggestive of someone who can easily be pushed around. Standing straight on the other hand can give you an air of confidence that some people would not want to play with.
Look Eye To Eye
One way to have that air of assertiveness around you is by trying to look at a person eye to eye during a confrontation. If there is someone who tries to oppress you in any way, try to look him or her straight in the eye. Never avoid his or her gaze or this will make you feel inferior. Looking at an oppressor in the eye tell that you are not someone to joke around with.
Act First
If you are seemingly at a standstill with your oppressor, try not to let him or her make the first move. Try to break the silence by speaking first. This will give you the upper hand that can catch the other party unprepared of what's happening.
Avoid Reacting
Try to avoid having your oppressor make the first move. This is especially true if you find yourself always meeting up with the antagonist on a regular basis. Don't let yourself in a situation where you just sit or stand there and wait for your oppressor's put down or rude remarks before you react. Don't wait for it. Instead try to do something before your oppressor has the chance to do so. This would help break the cycle for a change.
Encourage Yourself no Matter What Happens
Being assertive at times may not come out exactly as you might expect it to be. Sometimes, it might also work against you and sometimes, will work for you. But in any case, just try to give yourself a pat in the back, knowing that you have for once learned how to stand up for yourself.
