How to Be Popular at Work
Posted in Workplace Advice
If you try to be the most popular guy at work, this can mean two things: either it is difficult for you to be one or it is as easy as it gets. But if you think about it, there is no harm done in trying to be popular. Actually, there are even benefits. What are they? A healthy social life at work.
Knowing that you are popular doesn't mean that it's like you're some high school movie character. The only thing that you have to know are a certain bunch of things regarding how people treat you in your workplace. And, mind you, it is not that hard to discern.
Getting into conversations
When someone chats with you, this simply means one thing: that person likes to talk with you. If a colleague is interested in you, he or she will strike a conversation with you as if they haven't talked to anyone for years. If you have experienced this for several times, you know that it bolsters your self-confidence.
However, when you do initiate a conversation, you also have to watch out for their reactions. Take note if they are smiling, showing interest in the conversation that you are having.
If you are talking to female colleagues, watch out for the usual reactions you may expect from women like getting interested in doing some flirty talk with them. It means they are prepped up and like talking to you.
But on an opposite note, if they do things like looking at their watches when talking to you, or stop talking all of a sudden, then you might start thinking about being unpopular.
Being invited to eat
When your colleagues go out for lunch and you find yourself uninvited, it's obvious that something is wrong. Of course, it will be a different story if they are all corporate bigwigs. Your title may not be big enough to fit in their company. On the other hand, if someone of your level goes out with those other colleagues, it will leave you thinking if you are popular with them or not.
Having a nickname
If you are given a nickname, no matter how insulting, it means one thing: they appreciate who you are. So it is best that you appreciate yours as well. Nicknames are a sign of affection. What's the whole team about if they do not have "The Man" or "Monkey" with them?
Getting bullied and being the butt of jokes
If people are laughing because you are in their joke list, then you are already in for some bullying. But don't get bullied around. Say something to them. Basically, this is shows that you are just trying to horse around with them. Those who allow themselves to get bullied are those who get victimized.
Opinions regarding colleagues
When your colleagues are talking to you, listen to them. Good listeners are those who are also good in conversation. Listening to them helps in building company and friendships.
Remember that everything boomerangs, returning to you like a slap in the face or a sweet smile.
Making people to like you
Being likable, especially in the workplace is something that everyone vies. This is true for the unpopular ones, of course. So if you want to be liked by others, incorporate the things listed below in your life.
- Listen to your colleagues
- Learn more about them
- Present yourself at your best
- Share them a few ideas that you know
- Give them a treat
