Understanding Introverts in The Workplace

Posted in Workplace Advice

In a workplace, introverts are seen mostly as people who do not like people. The common terms for this is misanthropy. However, introverts have hidden potentials in them. What their co-workers' see in them is not always true.

Perceptions in the workplace

The common perception on introverts has already stuck up in the mindset of the general public. They have even been typecasted as the following: antisocial and not much of a team player because of timidity, inattentive and does not disclose information more often, and passive-aggressive in behavior. They are also often perceived as slow and unproductive, lacking in abilities, and always lacking enthusiasm.

The advantages of being an introvert

However, introverts have potential abilities hidden in them. These abilities are something they usually use to think or work clearly. Many people assume that introverts are not thinking of anything at all. What they do not know is that there is something else that's going on in there.

Why do workplace introverts act that way?

Introverts need some time alone because they need to recharge. All those interpersonal interactions drain them a lot of energy which is essential for working. So when they eat their lunch alone, that means they are trying to think of solutions to certain problems. Also, they are drawing out plans for what they have to do next.

Moreover, in case of meetings, they many not share a lot of ideas. But within their minds, they have all these thoughts, all well-thought and even thorough. In other words, introverts are naturally silent. They may withhold ideas to themselves, but they never are insubstantial.

How can colleagues understand the introverts in a workplace?

The first thing to consider is that assumptions have to be avoided. In most cases, colleagues and superiors think that introverts are those who need some time to consider things through. In fact, that is not the case at all. Their skills which they are good at should be recognized. Many introverts are methodical, patient and focused all the time.

Introverts only need to be better understood. Doing so will not only increase team productivity, but also camaraderie and worker-to-worker relationships. Introverts are also people who deserve some respect.
