Reducing Distractions
One of the key issues at the workplace for people with ADHD is distraction. Internal as well as external distractions pose a great challenge for working adults with ADHD. But there are some ways in which this can be dealt with effectively.
In order to avoid distractions, or keep it to a minimum at least, an individual with ADHD can try requesting for a private office or a relatively quiet cubicle or area to work in. If not, try working in a vacant conference room where there can be fewer distractions. People with ADHD can further reduce distractions by routing their phones directly on voicemail and set aside time to respond to them.
Reducing Impulsiveness
People with ADHD are also prone to become too impulsive. This can sometimes lead to sudden temper outbursts in the workplace. Trying to control impulsiveness can take work, but it is not impossible.
One of the ways that people with ADHD can do to cope up with their impulsive behaviors is by trying to use self-talk more often as a means to monitor their impulsiveness. Trying to practice relaxation and meditation techniques can also help one deal with severe impulsiveness.
Handling Poor Memory
People with ADHD are also prone to having poor memory. They may have difficulties remembering deadlines and meeting times. This can be considered by co-workers as a form of irresponsibility and can create tension in the office.
In order to avoid such situations, people with ADHD had to deal with memory issues and should try their best in order to remember important office schedules and deadlines. One way of doing this is by making a habit of putting everything into writing. Having a recording device on hand can also be used in meetings to better get hold of what has been discussed. Learn to have a day planner where you can keep track of the tasks being done presently as well as the other tasks and events ahead.
